Georgia O’Keeffe lived in Amarillo and Canyon, Texas between the years of 1912-1918. I started painting poppies in 2012 for a show I held in my studio, “Poppies, Canyons and Clouds”. She painted many poppies and close up florals. She also enjoyed painting in Palo Duro Canyon and the skies of West Texas. Georgia taught at West Texas Normal College, now West Texas A & M University in Canyon where I earned 2 degrees. I was a teacher and a painter, too. I also love to paint the canyon and skies of the Texas Panhandle. But that is about where our commonalities end. Our styles are very different. And I’m fairly sure our lifestyles are different too! But since that show, I have enjoyed the challenge of painting poppies in all colors, but red in particular. Reds present problems you don’t necessarily encounter with other colors. Being one of my favorite colors, I tend to bellieve that every room needs a splash of “Red”. This painting, Poppy Dream, is a beautiful red blossom that appears to be 3-dimensional. You see the tip of the petal that seems to just come off the canvas!
